Do Something Great!

great works that glorify God

Part 2 – You Were Created for Great Works

Human efforts become great works when they are directed by God and are accomplished for His glory, in His timing, and with His blessing.

You will not find fulfillment by simply getting a job or having a vocation. Fulfillment is found by seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (see Matthew 6:33), and by faithful obedience to do the “great works” of God that He planned for you before you were even born.

Consider the message of Ephesians 2:10: “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Imagine that! Before we were born, God designed a series of good works that we are to fulfill. As we complete one, the next opportunity opens up before us.

Paul was a tent-maker, Peter a fisherman, and Luke a physician, but their vocations did not represent the entire purposes for which they were created. Christ “gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar [unique] people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:14).

Human efforts become great works when they are directed by God and are accomplished for His glory, in His timing, and with His blessing. As we submit ourselves to the Redeemer as instruments in His hands, our good works become what we refer to in this manual as “great works.”

It is because of these great works that God instructs us to keep ourselves pure. “In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work” (II Timothy 2:20–21).
