serving in the “land down under”
Preparing to Serve
- What is the weather like?
- During the summer (December through February or March), the temperature will
periodically reach 100°F. In the winter (June and July), the weather can be quite chilly.
Overall, the weather is fairly warm and dry during summer and autumn.
- What is the housing situation?
- Housing at the Training Centre is dorm style with separate floors for men and women. There
is one person per room with an adjoining bathroom. Rooms are not air conditioned and
have no central heating, but fans are available for the summer and space heaters for
the winter.
- When will I know what my job responsibilities will be in Australia?
- Because of the diverse ministry opportunities at the Yarra Training Center, your job
responsibilities will probably vary with changing needs and pressures.
- What are the guidelines at the Training Centre?
- Generally, the code of conduct is similar to any IBLP function. Staff members enjoy
the small team/family atmosphere.
- How can I communicate with home?
- Phones and limited e-mail access will be available, and you are encouraged to regularly
communicate with your family. Inexpensive phone cards can be purchased in Australia.
- What are the prerequisites for serving in Australia?
- The main prerequisites for serving in Australia are being a Basic Seminar Alumnus, 17
years old or older, and committed to following the 7 basic Biblical principles (design,
authority, responsibility, suffering, ownership, freedom, and success). We also recommend
that you prepare a testimony to share with groups or churches.
- What do experienced staff members “wish they had known”?
-
- Study before you come! Learn about the Australian culture and
history.
- Use discretion! Americans are sometimes perceived as arrogant.
Work on humility, and be sensitive about talking about how wonderful
things are in the United States.
- Who buys my airline tickets for traveling to Australia?
- The Travel Coordinator at Headquarters is willing to find flights for you. If you
prefer, you can book your own ticket. Either way, you are responsible for payment of
your ticket and visa before you leave. Tickets usually cost around $1600–$1800.
- Is a visa needed for traveling to Australia?
- Yes. A minimum fee of $65 applies.
- What kinds of clothing will I need?
- Be prepared for winter (and the lack of central heating) with clothing you can layer,
such as sweaters, fleeces, and long johns. Because of the strong Mormon influence in
Australia, Yarra staff members does not wear navy and white attire very often, but, just in case,
bring at least one navy and white outfit. Otherwise, the clothing you bring should be basically
neat, casual attire, comfortable walking shoes, and one or two outfits for hard, dirty
work.
- May I bring a musical instrument?
- Though your musical instrument may count as a piece of luggage when
you fly (depending on its size), it can be very nice to have an
instrument for playing in church, meetings, and ATI Training Conferences.
