TESOL
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Testimonies
“The TESOL course enabled me to clarify the difference between teaching English and teaching English with the purpose of missions. Doug Sadler emphasized that TESOL should not be a way of “getting in” to a country so that you can “preach”; it should be the ministry you use to effectively minister and “live out” your faith. This mindset, along with the excellent teaching materials used, prepares students for the cultural shock and diverse teaching situations that they may encounter overseas.
“I taught English in Taiwan for seven months, and the concepts and principles I learned in the TESOL course were more applicable to my situation than the teaching materials themselves. Later, I assisted Mr. Sadler in teaching a TESOL course and again realized that it is more than just a course, it is preparation for any type of overseas ministry. Even for someone who is unsure if they will teach English in the future, the course is highly educational, motivational, and definitely worth the time it takes to complete. Students come away from the class with a new teaching style and a new outlook on life.”

“The TESOL course is excellent, including instruction in everything from the different learning styles to hands-on practicum! You have a chance to use all of your newly acquired knowledge. I left with a strong foundation in and understanding of the basic principles of teaching English as a second language.
“For me, the TESOL course was far more than simply a training course. God used TESOL in my life to show me what He has in store for my future. I went to the course unsure of how it fit into God’s plan for my life. I left with a whole new vision of how teaching English can be an amazing ministry through which I can share Christ. I am excited to see how God uses this in my life as a ministry for Him!”

“I received great benefit from the academic quality and the spiritual richness of this three-week course. Our teacher involved us in scores of interactive exercises designed to help us communicate to different types of learners. This training will be very practical as I pursue God’s calling on my life to overseas missions.”

“Taking the TESOL course was like the opening of a door. It gave me insight into a world I wanted to explore, and showed me what the true goals of teaching English ought to be! I was provided with resources and information to build upon, as well as different tools and methods best suited for teaching various age groups. It prepared me for numerous situations and gave me the groundwork for flexibility. The assignments were carefully designed to improve our newfound skills and to sharpen our effectiveness. Our teacher was patient, precise and proficient. An ideal instructor. She was very encouraging and taught us how to form realistic expectations. One thing that deeply impressed me was her commitment to teaching English with excellence. Not only does she have a heart for the Lord and for the people she teaches, but she is dedicated to doing everything to best of her ability and inspiring others to do the same!
“The highlight of the course was when we joined up with the VOICE students from Taiwan. Not only did it provide hands on experience and vital feedback, it was a very special experience to make such wonderful new friends. It gave us the opportunity to utilize our training, and a taste of teaching. The course was highly inclusive, yet personalized, and greatly helped to prepare me for my current life teaching in Taiwan.
“I miss Audra Wolfley, my teammates, my VOICE friends, and the time we shared, but I know that God was preparing us, opening our hearts and minds to follow Him wherever He might desire to lead us! In fact, over half of our team has followed God to teach across the globe and the rest are serving the Lord with teaching plans on their horizon. He used the course to refine and redefine us, and is now using each of us for His special purposes. I had such a great experience, I would do it all over again. I would encourage anyone interested in TESOL to attend!”
